Its characters are empowered by getting money for sex and by giving it, too-“I pay his rent if he nasty,” Sullivan quips on “Put It Down”-but inevitably the field tilts towards the weight of men’s entitlement.
Except for “Donna’s Tale,” whose narrator observes (as Venus Xtravaganza once did) that even women in conventional marriages exchange sex for security, the album rarely touches on actual sex work. Heauxdom, in Sullivan’s telling, was never strictly about money. They aren’t quite as sharp-elbowed as the original set they prioritize their characters’ sexual and emotional needs over financial ones, uncovering new strains of hurt and sources of light. duet “Girl Like Me,” the new songs adopt a slightly softer sound and more inward focus. But it’s a rare chance to quickly hear a new body of work from Sullivan, who’s typically spaced out her releases (with six years between Heaux Tales and 2015’s Reality Show). We didn’t, strictly speaking, need them-the original album stands alone. The new deluxe edition, Heaux Tales, Mo’ Tales, released ahead of Sullivan’s Valentine’s Day tour, extends the story with five additional songs and corresponding tales. Within it, Sullivan and her collaborators drew a picture of lust, heartbreak, betrayal, and insecurity so honest and complete it felt instantly familiar. Its announcement follows news that the 64th Grammy Awards - where “Heaux Tales” is nominated for best R&B album, and “Pick Up Your Feelings” is up for best R&B song and best R&B performance - is moving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and will take place on Sunday, April 3.Though Sullivan is gifted with a voice that can affect braggadocious confidence as readily as searching anguish, the original Heaux Tales was unassuming: eight songs and six spoken interludes, described in early press materials as a project, and sometimes an EP, rather than an album. Sullivan’s deluxe edition drops just days before the kickoff of her Heaux Tales Tour, set to start on Valentine’s Day in Vancouver.
Rae also has a home for her record label, Raedio, at Atlantic Records. In 2020, Rae launched a film production company, Hoorae, set to release HBO Max projects such as the “Seen & Heard” docuseries, the “Rap Sh*t” comedy series, along with projects for Netflix (“Ghost in the Machine”), Universal (“Sinkhole”) and Spyglass (“Perfect Strangers”). “What I would love is if me and a heauxtales short film and I’d add a few extra songs. This jibes with something Sullivan tweeted a year ago when she teased the idea of teaming with “Insecure” star and producer Issa Rae about creating a short film based on “Heaux Tales.” I’d like to move it into another arena, like film, where you could see new conversations and stories.” When asked if she would continue to expand “Heaux Tales” as a living, breathing, ever-evolving work - a la Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo” - after February 11, she says, “I’m not sure - yet. Sullivan is less forthcoming about whether Instagram snippets such as ”Jazzy’s Tale” would wind up on the deluxe edition, and how additional tracks going forward would move the needle on the album’s initial narrative. “I started ‘Heaux Tales’ with the idea of having open conversations as Black women, and you can’t put all of that into one project.
“The conversation continues,” Sullivan tells Variety of the deluxe edition.
